The Australian Insider Risk Centre of Excellence (AIR CoE), an initiative of the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre (Aus3C), has appointed Steve Mullins, Principal Consultant at B3C Insider Risk, as its first Visiting Fellow.
This appointment strengthens the Centre’s practitioner-led approach to building Australia’s insider risk capability across government, industry and critical infrastructure.
Bringing deep practitioner experience to AIR CoE
Steve brings extensive practitioner expertise in insider threat and cybersecurity risk across the Asia–Pacific region. His work focuses on the disruption and mitigation of trusted insider and cyber-enabled threats, supporting complex private-sector environments and global organisations, including Airbnb, where governance, human-centred security, and insider risk continue to grow in importance.
Before entering the private sector, Steve served as a senior member of the Australian Federal Police. During his career, he held international postings in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Papua New Guinea, building strong global law-enforcement and intelligence networks that inform his practical, threat-led approach to insider risk.
A long-standing contributor AIR CoE community
Steve is already an active member of the AIR CoE community, as a Premium Member and graduate of the AIR CoE Masterclass. He is widely recognised for his work in cybersecurity mentorship, particularly in the human behaviour aspects of insider risk, and for advising leaders on governance, assurance, and strategic risk.
Supporting Australia’s national insider risk capability
In his honorary Visiting Fellow role, Steve will provide senior independent advisory support to the AIR CoE. His work will contribute to:
- National capability development in insider risk
- Practitioner and executive training design
- Translating global best practice into practical guidance for members across government, industry, and critical infrastructure
- Participation in advisory forums, workshops, panels, and stakeholder discussions
Steve will also help strengthen collaboration with international partners, including the United States Insider Risk Centre of Excellence (US-IRCoE), the Canadian Insider Risk Centre of Excellence (C-IRCoE), and the Five Eyes Insider Risk Practitioners Alliance (FIRPA).
Guy Roberts, CEO of the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre, welcomed the appointment:
“Steve’s appointment strengthens AIR CoE’s practitioner-led approach to insider risk. His operational credibility, international perspective, and commitment to mentoring align strongly with the Centre’s mission to advance Australia’s insider risk capability.”
The Visiting Fellow role reflects AIR CoE’s commitment to building a strong national community of practice and connecting Australian organisations with global insider risk expertise.
